Summer has rolled around. Birds are flying (like they do), girls are wearing short shorts (greatest invention since the wheel?), and the sun doesn’t set until 9pm. But for many of us, summer also means the fierce hunt for a job. Sure, it’s easy enough if you already have lots of experience, but what if you don’t?
Worry no more. I’m here to give you some advice, and people have often described my advice as “better than nothing, I guess”. So here goes:
1. Be patient. You are probably going to get rejected way more often than you will get hired. Keep applying to different places until you get an interview.
2. Know your place. You aren’t going to get hired as the President of the United States anytime soon. If you have no experience and little education, you shouldn’t expect to get a better job than a burger-flipper. You can always start small and work your way up.
3. Be consistent. Make sure your volunteer and work experiences form a coherent history of your interests. If you want to become a journalist, it makes sense to join the newspaper club at your school.
4. Build relationships. Having a solid reference, even if it’s from a volunteer experience, can be very helpful in getting a job.
5. ????
6. Profit.
Don’t you feel employable already?
