“Can’t stop, won’t stop! Can’t stop won’t stop! CAN’T STOP WON’T STOP!” That’s the chant you’d here coming out behind the curtains Friday night, October 14th 2011 at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby. The lights were dim, and the music began; the competition had begun. DREAM dance studio once again held another spectacular show dedicated to showcasing the works of talented choreographers.
Challenge, Progress, Refresh was back, this time showcasing a new line- up of choreographers up against defending champions of CPR 1, Jazmine Galang and Caroline Dao. The concept of the show was to challenge dancers in creating original pieces with the advantage of choosing who could be in their piece, what music to dance to, and costume choice. All Creative control was given to the choreographers, as their main goal was to find inspiration from what they had to work with. CPR 1 was a huge success calling for the second one to be bigger and better. The grade prize had doubled to $2000 and a trip to LA to train and further their progression in dance.
This CPR 2 called for new obstacles as well. The main theme of the show was opposites attract, therefore, each group had to incorporate two distinct styles in their routine. Competing dancers also had to compete in pre ticket sales. Groups only had less than three weeks to come up with a routine. At the end of each week, ticket sales were collected and the top selling group of the week obtained 10 extra ballots to be added with the audience votes at the live show. This time around, after the audience voted for their top two performances, guest judges had the honor to choose the winner. DREAM dance studio had the honor to be in the presence of Mos Wanted Crew’s Troy Austria, and choreographer Terence Spencer.
Congratulations to Theron Eikre and Andrew Galang for beating out 5 other groups. Their piece featured hype, swag and lights to wow the crowd and judges, being the winners of CPR 2.
Each group has very little time to prepare for their pieces. Each team put in long hours, late nights and had to brace the cold of Robson Square to get where their piece was. Mad love for the all the groups who had supported one another and much respect for the dancers who share the continual passion for the art of dance. Originality and dedication are the reasons why DREAM dance studio thrives to continuously be ambitious.
