You heard me right ladies and gents, as of April 26, 2012, acclaimed fashion label Betsey Johnson, LLC filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. This means an end to all the out-there prom dresses, gorgeous summer dresses, makeup bags, wedges or floppy sun hats, all of which Johnson helped make popular .
Johnson was never one to follow the rules, something any true fashionista will understand. There’s no harm in designing to the beat of your own drum, and as Johnson proved for over 40 years, it is possible to make not only a living, but an internationally recognized label that appeals to the young and old alike.
So you’re probably asking yourself, what’s the big deal, its just another fashion line that people won’t remember years from now. Johnson created something that the fashion world needed, it’s about more than just wearability, it’s about original self-expression. A quote from Johnson’s website says it best, “If Betsey Johnson didn’t exist, we would have to invent her, simply to remind ourselves that fashion can be fun. She’s the original wild child and set to paint the town pink!” In a time where everyone takes themselves too seriously, Johnson showed us that the best thing we can do for ourselves is to be ourselves. So whether that means a pair of six-inch heels, lime green tutu and a tiara or the classic little black dress, fashion is a creative outlet, and the most visible and personal one we have.

Johnson gave the fashion world a taste of her crazy and dared anyone to object, and for almost five decades Johnson remained a top player and one of the most internationally recognized names in fashion. Betsey, you were a major influence in my love of fashion and you will not be forgotten.
