Meet the Y57 Team: Sam Miess

Sam Miess

Hey Sam! Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hey! My name is Sam Miess. I’m a Communications and French student up at Simon Fraser University. I live out in the far distant land of Langley where horses sprinkle the fields and busses only come every 30 minutes – it’s a humbling lifestyle. Some of my favourite joys in life right now include learning about different modes of communication and expression, practicing French, painting fruit and listening to good stories and bad jokes.

Choose three words to describe you.

Enthusiastic, witty, and curious.

Why did you join Y57?

I was excited to join Y57 because of its close connection to the Vancouver music scene and how its focus is on youth and community involvement. Y57 on Co-op radio is truly a unique and special gem that puts the community and education above corporate gain, unlike many other major media outlets – it’s too cool!

What do you currently do at Y57?

At Y57 I’m one of the music programmers and interviewers which entails creating weekly playlists as well as contacting local musicians to invite into the studio to be featured. If you have some new material out please drop me a line!

What is your favourite part about being part of Y57?

It’d have to be getting to meet and share the work of Vancouver musicians! It’s a real honour to meet such creative and passionate people that are creating the playlists that accompany our experiences.

Give yourself a nickname in relation to what you do on the show:

Sam the music monkey!

What is your ultimate life goal?

My ultimate life goal is to work in emergency management and be of service to others. That, and to see an Oreo Cow in real life. If you haven’t heard of them, Google it.

What are three things that you cannot live without?

Dogs, sunscreen, and MUSIC.

What is your biggest fear?

My biggest fear is heights!! You can’t fall if your feet are on the ground…well…not much anyways.

Which celebrity would play you in the movie about you, Sam?

In the hit feature film about myself, let’s be honest, Julianne Moore would play me. It would be a comedy/thriller about red heads taking over the planet but running out of sunscreen.

Make a 5-song playlist of your favourite songs!

“Old Pine” by Ben Howard

“Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall

“Tom Sawyer” by RUSH

“Unstoppable” by Lianne La Havas (FKJ Remix)

“Formidable” by Stromae

What social media can people find you at?

I dabble in the Twitter a little bit @sam.miess, but I’m mostly found in person in the colourful 3D offline world.

This is part of a series that introduces you to the members of our Y57 team, which came together on January 3, 2017. Check out the other member’s profiles here!
