Hey Rachel! Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a proud Surrey native, pursuing a major in Communication and a minor in International Studies at SFU. I love writing, music, and spending time with my family and friends. The food scene in Vancouver is my Achilles heel, especially coffee, beer, and anything sweet.
Choose three words to describe you.
Driven, musical, and wordsmith.
Why did you join Y57?
As an aspiring journalist, I had a keen interest in getting as much practical experience as possible. I never considered radio since I had this insecurity about how my voice sounds recorded. But once I got over the cringing, I found that it was just as exhilarating as seeing my name in print besides something I wrote. I was also really intrigued by the mandate of the show and wanted to learn more about the world of radio!
What do you do at Y57?
I am the primary board operator and I update the website. From time to time I help create show playlists, interview guests, and chime in on the bantering.
What is your favourite part about being part of Y57?
The fact that Y57 (and Vancouver Co-op Radio) is a co-operative is really inspiring. We share a lot of the responsibilities and we get to learn with and from each other. The team that I am working with is incredibly diverse and talented, and we always have so much fun when we are in the studio.
Give yourself a nickname for what you do on the show:
I’m not sure how this came about, but I believe the team likes to call me “Mom”. I think this is my early preparation for parenthood.
What is your greatest life goal?
It’s a toss-up between being able to publish poetry books and hosting my own talk show. Aside from that, it would also be cool to be on Saturday Night Live so that Eastern Asian characters are actually played by someone of that ethnic descent! So I guess I have multiple life goals.
What are three things that you cannot live without?
Wi-Fi, food (I’m not terribly picky), and human interaction.
What is your biggest fear?
ALL INSECTS, and letting people down.
Which celebrity would play you in the movie about you, Rachel?
I LOVE Constance Wu, who stars in the ABC series “Fresh Off the Boat”! She is a kick-ass Chinese actress and is incredibly funny and beautiful.
Make a 5-song playlist of your favourite songs!
“I Wish” by Tom Misch
“One Thousand Times” by James Vincent McMorrow
“Erase” by Copeland
“Son” by Sleeping at Last
“The Magician” by Andy Shauf
