Hey Sam! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m Sam Mumford and I am a communication student at Simon Fraser University. I grew up in the small little farming town of Lynden, Washington right across the border from Abbotsford. Football, lacrosse, and playing the drums where a big part of my childhood. As I graduated from Lynden Christian I had the privilege of continuing my lacrosse career for Simon Fraser’s Men’s lacrosse team the past two years and have just recently completed my first season of box lacrosse for the Maple Ridge Burrards. When I am not in school or playing lacrosse I’m often doing some kind of art project or DJing with my fellow host and musical partner Grifyn and another good friend John Cilenti. We are currently working on some of our very own original music and hope for it to be played on our show real soon!
Choose three words to describe yourself.
Musical, artistic, and charming.
Why did you join Y57?
When I was young I used to stay up and watch late night talk shows some nights with my parents. As I grew older (and my bedtime got later) I continued to watch them more frequently. Very quickly I was put in a trance by these hosts like Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, or Steve Colbert and their ability to make an informative show but yet keep it so entertaining and comical. I soon decided that this too was something I wanted to do and as I was going into university decided to study Communication. I see Y57 as a small first step to obtaining this dream of mine of someday having my very own show like some of my heroes.
What do you currently do at Y57?
I am one of the hosts and producers. My partner Grifyn and I also open up the show most nights introducing what our show will be about that particular evening as well as some funny topics we come across involving the Vancouver area the past week.
What is your favourite part about being part of Y57?
I really enjoy getting to discover all the music the city of Vancouver has to offer and then giving these amazing musicians/people a platform for them to promote their music that they are so passionate about. I also love my team; they are all super cool individuals that makes coming to the radio show every Tuesday night one of the highlights of my week.
Give yourself a nickname in relation to what you do on the show:
DJ SammyD – Italian #2.
What is your ultimate life goal?
As mentioned above, my dream would be to host my very own late night show. However, music has played such a central part of my life and has been a hobby that I have continued to be passionate about for over half my life and now, and it would also be a dream come true to become a professional DJ. Both lofty dreams I realize but you might as well aim high! Regardless of whatever profession I decide on my ultimate life goal would to never stop being passionate and zealous about life. Our time here is short and I don’t want to let a single day to go wasted.
What are three things that you cannot live without?
Peaches, books, and music.
What is your biggest fear?
Spiders, really can’t handle those things. Not ashamed to say that I’ll make very high pitched shrieking noises when a spider is in my general vicinity.
Which celebrity would play you in the movive about you, Sam?
I would hope someone like Bradley Cooper or Matthew McConaughey, but in all reality I think actors like James Franco, Seth Rogen, or Paul Rudd would do a better job capturing my personality.
