Become a Volunteer Snow Angel

The City of Vancouver is preparing for the 2011 – 2012 winter season, and are looking for some help. You can lend a hand by keeping sidewalks clear of ice and snow.
The City of Vancouver requires all property owners and occupants (tenants) to clear ice and snow from the sidewalks adjacent to their property no later than 10 am after a snowfall (7 days a week). For some seniors and persons with disabilities moving snow can be difficult and even dangerous. Not clearing sidewalks can make streets unsafe and difficult for those with mobility issues.
You and your community group can help:
- When it snows, lend a hand to people in your neighbourhood who could use help shoveling their sidewalk.
- Adopt the sidewalk of a senior or a person with mobility issue and keep it clear of snow and ice all winter long.
- Be a point of contact in your community when the snow falls. Get on the City’s 3-1-1 Snow Angels list. (The City’s 3-1-1 Contact Centre will put your organization’s contact information on the list, which will be used by The City of Vancouver’s citizen service representatives to give out to residents who need help with snow removal.)
By providing an unforgettable service in a time of need, you could earn community service hours, receive a thank you letter from the City and win prizes!

Bright Nights in Stanley Park

Position Title: Administrative Assistant, Human Resources and Volunteer Development
Location: Vancouver
Job Summary:
Take lead accountability for being the first point of contact for all clients, visitors and volunteers arriving and calling into Heart and Stroke Foundation – Provincial Office (BC and Yukon). Support Human Resources and Volunteer Development team by providing assistance on project basis.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Reception:
- Warmly and professionally handle telephone inquiries in a prompt and efficient manner.
- Welcome and guide clients, visitors and volunteers to appropriate contacts within the office
- Maintain a high degree of discretion and confidentiality around telephone calls and scheduled guest appointments
- Efficiently operate the switchboard as well as trains relief receptionist (including staff)
- Ensure seasonal greetings are recorded on office voice mail system to reflect Foundation days and hours of operation.
- Work with Office Systems Assistant to trouble shoot Provincial Office phone system problems
- Perform daily AED Battery Check
Security:
- Ensure all visitors remain at reception until greeted by the staff member they are meeting
- Maintain the sign in/out volunteer log. Assist Volunteers with general office protocol including any general questions
- Keep the staff in/out board up-dated to reflect current information on employee availability
- Monitor and oversee the parking lot log book for use of staff, volunteer and visitor parking requirements
- Prepare necessary paperwork for ordering & deleting Security Cards as needed
- Responsible for the signing in and out of general office Keys to the employees
Administration
- Work efficiently and cooperatively with other foundation departments providing administrative support around seasonal special projects and initiatives as required.
- Update provincial staff list & phone numbers and ensure the most up to date list is up-loaded to shared drive by IT department
- Prepare, post, and advise staff of monthly kitchen duty schedule
- Maintain and account for petty cash box transactions
- Process cash, cheques, & credit card transactions for the selling of HSF cookbooks to the general public
- Liaise with property manager when required to do so
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:- 2 – 3 years previous reception and administrative work experience
- Post secondary diploma/degree in business or related field
- Positive, friendly attitude is a must in this position along with a ‘whatever it takes’ attitude
- Pleasant and professional customer service skills
- Organized with attention to detail
- Proficient MS Office Suite skills and the ability to multitask
- Punctual with time and attendance

The Improv Test Kitchen is an exciting platform for new and innovative improvisational comedy. This show features the newest, hottest improv shows, presented by a rotating cast of mainstage company members. Improvisers bring show concepts they have developed to The Improv Centre stage, presenting them to you, an audience of mouth-watering, improv enthusiasts. Over the hour-long show, audiences will be treated to the latest show concepts in the improv-comedy world – this is a great show for the improv lover who thinks they’ve seen it all. Improv Test Kitchen plays every Wednesday at 9:00pm.

Ali Baba at the Metro Theatre

Deck the halls with boughs of holly….it’s the pantomime season again, eagerly awaited by tiny tots and adults alike!
At this festive season Metro is presenting a pantomime seldom performed any more, ALI BABA, complete with all the stock characters, Ali Baba, Wakey Fakir, the evil El Hoot Dawg, the sinister Rhum Baba, and of course a pantomime dame (this year Cassie Blanca). Throw in the never to be forgotten Demon Distastely, add his arch enemy Fairy Nerd and sprinkle in an animal or two in Mudder, the sacred cow and Dobbin, the donkey and you can see we have a great line up of comedic characters to entertain you.
Many new faces are appearing in this years panto as a series of complications have resulted in many regulars not being in a position to perform the show this year.
Included are Christopher Dellinger as the Demon, Jennifer Moran as the Fairy, James Walker as Ali Baba, Andre Wade as Wakey Fakir andSara Dickinson as Polly.
Johnny Duncan who writes the pantomime each year is co-directing with Cathy Wilmot along with popular choreographer Dawn Ewen and David Rogers conducting the baton as Musical Director.
Ticket prices remain the same as last years pantomime at $23.50 for adults but only $14.00 for children of ten years of age and under,
There will be laughs galore, lots of audience participation, eye boggling scenery in what is guaranteed to be the highlight of the holiday season.
Advance tickets for the pantomime are now on sale at our box office and can be ordered by phone at 604-266-7191. Visa, Mastercard can be taken over the phone but Debit can not. It can be accepted if bought direct at our box-office .

Join the Lower Mainland Green Team

Looking for a constructive way to help the environment?
The Lower Mainland Green Team is a group of people from all over the Lower Mainland who get together once a month (sometimes more) to help an environmental group, non-profit organization, charity or city tackle an environmental issue that needs co-operation and teamwork to get done. Gloves and tools will be supplied as well as refreshments! If you care about the environment, this is the group for you. It is open to all ages.
Some activities will include:
• Pulling invasive plants that are overtaking our native flora
• Planting of native plants/trees
• Restoring areas along a stream, river, marsh or shoreline
• Beach/River/lake clean up
• Harvesting organic fruits/veggies
• Trail building/maintenance
