How Outdated Are the Liquor Laws?

The recent Rio Theatre vs. B.C. Liquor Control debacle has caused widespread discontent among locals and the remaining supporters of single-screen movie theatres. According to new liquor laws, theatres with liquor licenses are now able to both screen movies and serve alcohol--just not at the same time. Furthermore, showtimes would have to be scheduled in stone, which is difficult, as live performances at venues are subject to change. Owners are still unsatisfied with the latest concession; however, it doesn't seem to be any new news. The frustration can be traced back to nearly a century ago. 1920-...

Asian signs: they have a purpose.

Recently, Vancouver Sun Op-Ed writer Douglas Todd sparked some controversy when he advocated for the abolition of foreign signs, namely Chinese, in Richmond. On the same day of the same paper, Harvey Enchin countered the topic by stating that to restrict Chinese signs would be 'un-Canadian'. A few days later, Todd then shared a few letters, of which he received from people of Chinese or Asian descent, who supported his view. However, these letters are undoubtedly from residents who have already, if not fully, integrated themselves into the English-speaking community. In simplest terms, an immigrant...

Are you employable? An interview with Tammy Tsang

Posted by: Justin Choi    Tags:  Baby boomers, Experience, Generation X, Generation Y, jobs, Tammy Tsang, XYBOOM, y57, youth, youth unemployment    Posted date:  January 26, 2012  |  No comment

Are you young and out of work? Are you worried about your future career prospects? Well, I can't help you, but I know someone who can: Tammy Tsang. Tammy is a fierce young entrepreneur who just successfully organized the XYBOOM Conference. Just in case you missed the buzz around town, XYBOOM was a conference about rising concerns of youth unemployment (Generation Y), as Baby Boomers begin to retire from the workforce while Generation X is reluctant to hire Gen Y'ers because of factors such as inexperience, and an inflated sense of entitlement. Many think that there aren't enough Gen X'ers to fill...

The SFSS Lockout: What Do YOU Think?

Getting locked out of your house sucks major balls. Trust me; if anybody has ended up sitting on their front steps for hours waiting to be let in by an angry parent at 3 am, it’s me. But as soon as I’m in the comfort of my home and under my zebra-printed bed sheets (don’t judge) feeling as safe as I ever will be, their frustration hardly matters. Everything is in your house; your clothes, your food, your life, and most importantly the feelings of unity and harmony with yourself when surrounded by your family unit, or whomever it is that you choose to share living space with. I don’t know...

Money Grab U(niversity): SFU Edition

Have you ever wondered why university students pay so much for their university tuition? To be honest, I never really gave it any thought. I would see the amount owing, go to the bank, pay it off and never think twice to why I paid so much. It was not until the beginning of this semester that I realized that not only do I pay more money than I used to, I am not gaining anything more from the services. Yes, I realize I’m in my fourth year at SFU and am taking upper division courses now but the jump in tuition fees is insane. So I started to do some research, talked to some peers and realized that...

Held at Vancouver Community College's Downtown campus, "Moving from Talk to Action: Youth in BC" was a forum organized by First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition and the BC Government and Service's Employee Union on June 17th, 2011. The purpose of this event was to talk to youth and agencies that work with youth about how young people can get involved in activities in their local communities. Furthermore, the event spoke about the different resources that are available to young people to help them get engaged with communities. Throughout the forum, there were multiple speakers who talked...

Summer Jobs for Youth

Posted by: Justin Choi    Tags:  Employment, Hints, Internship, Job Hunting, summer, Tips, youth    Posted date:  June 12, 2011  |  No comment

Summer has rolled around. Birds are flying (like they do), girls are wearing short shorts (greatest invention since the wheel?), and the sun doesn't set until 9pm. But for many of us, summer also means the fierce hunt for a job. Sure, it's easy enough if you already have lots of experience, but what if you don't? Worry no more. I'm here to give you some advice, and people have often described my advice as "better than nothing, I guess". So here goes: 1. Be patient. You are probably going to get rejected way more often than you will get hired. Keep applying to different places until you get an interview. 2. Know...

In hopes of sparking youth interest in global issues, Christina Guan created News4Teens, an online news source offering written works on global business, entertainment, science/technology, sports, and much more. Christina, unlike many of her peers, is highly interested in increasing the amount of globally aware teens, and hopes to finish off her graduating year at Moscrop Secondary with this in mind as she continues to offer a source that is much like Y57, something created for youth, by youth. News4Teens ensures every article is 200 words or less in order for the information to be concise....

Premier Gordon Campbell addressed the Union of B.C. Municipalities annual convention on October 1 discussing many ways in which to move British Columbia’s economy forward. Topics such as extending the Skytrain through Surrey to Langley, providing additional funds for cycling paths and sidewalks, and donating $1 million to communities hosting future BC Winter Games and BC Summer Games made thelist. However, the ongoing question of whether or not to raise the minimum wage to $10 was not answered or discussed at all. B.C.’s lowest-paid workers have not seen a raise since 2001, when the minimum...
