On Sunday, June 25, Y57 hosted Y57: Unplugged, which was our fundraiser for Vancouver Co-op Radio. The entire Y57 team was present, along with many family members, friends, and community members that came out for a night of music, poetry, and community. It was so great to see so many familiar faces and to share the incredible talent that this city has to offer.
The night started off with some opening remarks from our dynamic duo, Grifyn McErlean and Sam Mumford, who you can typically hear opening up the show every Tuesday night! This was followed by a poem by Sam’s younger brother, Gavin Mumford! Talent clearly runs through the family!
We then heard Adam Janis perform some songs from his previous EPs, Yellow and Blue, as well as previewing some songs that would be release in upcoming EPs. Partway through his set, he called upon a good friend of his – and one of our very own – Mirelle Mokhtar! Together, they performed an original song, and Adam accompanied Mirelle on some covers. They were both so graceful and secure in their performance, you probably wouldn’t believe it if we told you that it was the first time that they were performing solo!
There was a quick historical break by Y57 member Sam Miess, who talked about the history of co-op radio and why supporting it is super important for our community! We then launched back into poetry with Mateo Cloma, who comes to us from Surrey. He shared with us a few pieces that he wrote and we were blown away by his mastery of words and rhyme. Joining him was another member of the Y57 team – Rachel Wong! Rachel also performed two of her own pieces, and together they performed a partner slam that they wrote back in grade 12, and hadn’t performed since grade 12 either!
We had a quick intermission and then it was back to poetry, this time by slam poetry veteran and champion Andrew Warner! Andrew performed a number of poems with poise and grace, and it was incredible to be in the presence of such a seasoned performer!
The show closed with a stunning performance by Nikita! She performed a number of original songs off of her most recent EP, Games, as well as a few covers. She really got the crowd going with her smooth vocals and incredible stage presence, and we are so thankful that she was able to join us and be our headlining act!
